The late Aaliyah sang 'age and nothing but a number' which should definitely be the theme song for Dominique's hurdle career. None other than Dominique Arnold won the men's 110 hurdles. Lashinda's performance means that in relation to the entire season's performances, Shinda's 400 hurdle performance displayed more athleticism than any other performance in any other female track and field event for the year. Yes, you CAN make money in track and field.

flat to win the race and the VISA championship series making her $100,000 richer. Coming down the homestretch however, Shinda's strength proved superior because she crossed the tape in 53. Hurdle races are my favorite and I defiantly got a kick out of watching Lashinda Demus and Tiffany Ross-Williams battle in the 400 hurdles (both are former Gamecock NCAA champions).

Although she got 2nd, she ran 22.4 which is phenomenal for the fact that she has run more than 10 sub 23 second 200 meter times for the season and came close to her PR/ school record. She pulled magic from nowhere in finals and blasted out the blocks. Her fatigue was apparent and my only hope was that she would avoid injury. Honestly, Shalonda did not look too hot during semis. Shortly after Shalonda took the track and put on a show. Leroy ran well for having an inside lane and just missed the school's outdoor record. The 200 finals came next and my stomach dropped. What was most admirable is that she put EVERYTHING on the line. Hazel Clark ran a gutsy 800 meter race that saw her lean and fall at the line. Watching the meet was a lot of fun, a rarity for me since I'm usually running several rounds at meets. Only Leroy and Shalonda remained from my current team but were warming up for their races, so I sat with ex-Gamecocks Tony Allmond and Kenneth Ferguson. I headed for the section where my team was at only to find that most had left to go the airport. I learned that I don't have the strength to handle lots of rounds, as if NCAA's wasn't a good enough indication lol. All that's important is that you learn from days like this. I sucked today and honestly it wasn't the first time, and surely won't be the last. I will NOT throw a pity party for myself because in the end there is no point. After mumbling some light, (I promise they were light) obscenities, I threw my clothes on and went straight for the stands. I finished in a disappointing 6th position and missed qualifying for finals. My legs were flat and dead, undoubtedly from poor energy management from my preliminary heat that I ran all out like I was going for gold. I couldn't handle the rounds of hurdling and it became apparent when the gun went off. It is for those reasons that the rounds system hurts younger athletes like myself. I guess in an objective sport like track and field, you sometimes forget the importance of knowledge and experience. While in the blocks I tried to remember my technical cues and remember thinking how much camera time Terrence Trammell was getting and how it would have definitely thrown off my race had it been me. I wasn't as nervous for the semis as I was the preliminary heat. I laughed it off and jogged to the tent where I found that they've had been looking for me for the last 5 minutes.

While in the stands I got up to feel a huge wet spot on my pants from sitting on the very wet bleachers. I did my normal obnoxious and loud cheering from the stands before I needed to get back to the check in tent. Two of my teammates, Leroy Dixon and Shalonda Solomon, would be running and I definitely couldn't miss it.īoth Leroy and Shalonda made the 200 meter final which made me feel hyped and confident for my race. Seeing that I was a few minutes early, after dropping my stuff off I went down to the fence to catch the 200 semis heats. I walked to the check in tent near the track in anticipation for the final call for men's high hurdles. I felt good going into my semis and had plenty of time to relax before my race. I did the best I could and worked up a good sweat. I was extremely tight and tired and had a shorter amount of time to warm up because the events would be run quicker than normally scheduled. The meet finally started back up after the weather cleared and I resumed my warm up (4 hours later).
